Museum of Money

(Museu da Moeda)

Hidden beneath Luanda’s Marginal, this underground museum traces Angola’s economic story with modern, immersive displays. Operated by the National Bank of Angola; opened in 2016, next to the BNA headquarters.

More than an exhibition space, the Museum of Money is a subterranean journey through value, exchange and identity: from pre-monetary systems to the birth of the Kwanza in 1977. Contemporary layout, audiovisual rooms and careful curation, great for curious travellers, students and families.

Inaugurated in 2016 by the National Bank of Angola (BNA), the museum sits beneath a plaza along the Marginal. It blends architecture and narrative: polished local stone, clean lines and sequential galleries guiding you from barter to contemporary currency.

  • Best for: a 45–90 min visit; pair with a Marginal stroll.
  • Atmosphere: calm, contemporary, educational.
  • Note: photography rules may vary — follow staff guidance.
