Angola's new flagship airport

Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport was inaugurated on November 10, 2023 and has been activated in phases for cargo, domestic passenger traffic and international passenger operations.

It is now the main current reference airport for Luanda, while 4 de Fevereiro remains the legacy city airport many travellers still know by name.

At a glance

  • Main commercial airport serving Luanda today
  • Located about 42 km from central Luanda
  • Built for major passenger and cargo growth
  • Designed to receive large aircraft including the Airbus A380
  • Important to Angola's regional hub ambitions
For most current flights and airport planning, this is the first airport page to check.

Passenger volume

The airport is designed for up to 15 million passengers per year.

Cargo capacity

Recent project and ministry communications commonly describe first-phase cargo handling at about 130,000 tonnes a year.

Runways

It has two parallel runways and was planned to receive widebody aircraft including the Airbus A380.

Different official communications describe the wider airport development area in different ways, but the operational message is clear: this is a very large airport designed for long-term growth.

What to expect

The airport was designed with modern passenger processing infrastructure, immigration areas, baggage handling, commercial space and accessibility features expected from a major new international airport.

  • Check-in and passenger processing infrastructure
  • Immigration and baggage handling areas
  • Commercial, food and service areas that may continue expanding
  • Accessibility support and step-free circulation

Retail mix, lounges, food options and service availability can evolve as operations mature, so exact on-site offerings may change over time.

Visa rules depend on passport and trip purpose

Angola currently combines visa exemptions for some nationalities with e-visa and other visa pathways for others. The correct rule depends on your nationality, reason for travel and length of stay.

Before you fly

  • Check your eligibility directly through official visa channels
  • Confirm passport validity requirements
  • Review yellow fever and entry documentation requirements where applicable
  • Recheck rules shortly before departure because immigration policy can change

Distance and timing

Because the airport sits well outside central Luanda, journey planning matters more here than it did with 4 de Fevereiro. Trip times vary with traffic and time of day.

Best common options

Ride-hailing apps, private transfers and agreed-fare taxis are the most practical options for many travellers, especially with luggage or late arrivals.

Good habit

Book or compare your transfer before landing whenever possible, especially if you arrive at night or during heavier traffic periods.

Where it is

The airport is in the Bom Jesus / Icolo e Bengo area to the east-southeast of Luanda, rather than inside the city itself. For many visitors, that extra distance is the most important practical difference.
