Kissama National Park
Quiçama Day Safari
Open savanna, ancient baobabs, riverine scenery and one of Angola’s best-known wildlife experiences within reach of Luanda.
Kissama is not just about animal sightings. It is also about the scale of the landscape, the feeling of openness, the old baobabs and the experience of spending a full day out in one of Angola’s most iconic natural areas.
Sightings can vary, so the best approach is to go with the right expectations: enjoy the scenery, the atmosphere and the journey, and treat the wildlife as a special bonus rather than a guarantee.

Kissama, or Quiçama, is Angola’s best-known wildlife area within day-trip reach of Luanda. Expect open savanna, ancient baobabs and riverine scenery, with possible sightings of antelopes, giraffe, zebra and rich birdlife. Sightings vary by season and luck, so the landscape and overall experience are a major part of the appeal.
Duration
Full day from Luanda, usually with a very early start.
Getting there
Roughly two and a half to three and a half hours by road south, depending on route and conditions.
On the ground
Usually park entry plus guided game drive, and sometimes lunch or a Kwanza River section.
Possible sightings
- Large mammals: giraffe, zebra, warthog and several antelope species.
- Smaller fauna: baboons, monkeys and sometimes jackal.
- Birdlife: hornbills, bee-eaters, rollers, raptors and waterbirds near the Kwanza.
Expectation setting
Sightings vary with season, time of day and luck, so it is best to go for the scenery and the overall safari experience, with wildlife as an exciting part of the day rather than a certainty.
- Dry season: generally better road conditions and often easier wildlife viewing.
- Weekends: can be busier, so an early start helps with both light and comfort.
- 05:00 to 06:00 pickup in Luanda and early departure.
- 08:30 to 09:00 arrival near the park and entry formalities.
- 09:00 to 12:00 game drive through savanna and baobab areas.
- 12:00 to 13:00 lunch stop, depending on operator.
- 13:00 to 15:00 second short drive or exit via a Kwanza section.
- 17:30 to 19:00 return to Luanda, traffic depending.
- Light long sleeves, hat and sunscreen.
- Water and snacks, unless lunch is clearly included.
- Binoculars and camera, with extra battery or power bank.
- Common inclusions: 4x4 with driver or guide, park entry and water, and sometimes lunch.
- Possible add-ons: lodge lunch, Kwanza boat section, drinks and tips.
- Group versus private: shared options reduce cost per person, while private tours give more flexibility.
- Payments: always confirm whether card is accepted, as many still prefer transfer, Multicaixa or cash.
Availability, vehicles and response times can vary between operators, which is normal in a destination that is still developing its tourism structure. The smoother option is always to confirm practical details early and keep a backup plan in mind.

- Follow the guide’s instructions and keep safe distances.
- Take all rubbish away and leave no trace.
