Transport overview

Plan before you move

Luanda traffic, airport distance, train schedules and changing pickup points make planning useful. Confirm the airport code, transport option, driver name, phone number and payment method before travelling.

Airport note

The new NBJ airport is around 40-45 km from central Luanda. Road transfer time depends heavily on traffic, while the Bungo airport train can be useful when its timetable fits your flight.

Backup habit

Keep two ride apps, a trusted driver contact, offline maps and some cash in kwanzas for small transport costs.

Confirm the airport code

For most passenger flights, check for NBJ, Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport. The older Quatro de Fevereiro Airport uses code LAD.

Always check your ticket and airline update before departure.

Best arrival setup

  • Pre-book a hotel transfer or trusted driver.
  • Confirm meeting point, driver name and phone number.
  • Ask whether the driver tracks flight delays.
  • Keep your destination address and Google Maps link ready.
  • Carry some cash in kwanzas for small costs.

Useful apps

Common options include T'Leva, Kubinga, Heetch, UGO, Yango and inDrive. Availability can vary by area, time and phone connection.

Before entering

  • Confirm car, plate and driver name.
  • Check the route before starting.
  • Share your live location at night.

Practical backup

If one app has no cars nearby, try another app or call a trusted driver. Keep your phone charged and internet active.

If you are new to Luanda

A car with driver is often easier than self-drive at the beginning, especially if you are not used to local traffic, parking, checkpoints or informal directions.

Before booking

  • Check insurance coverage and exclusions.
  • Confirm deposit, fuel policy and mileage limits.
  • Inspect the car and photograph existing damage.
  • Confirm what happens in case of breakdown.
  • Ask whether the vehicle is suitable for your route.

Good to know

Luanda has buses and candongueiros, the shared minibus taxis used by many locals. They are cheap and common, but routes can be confusing for first-time visitors.

They are usually better for experienced locals, Portuguese speakers, or travellers accompanied by someone who knows the routes.

Use with care

  • Carry small cash in kwanzas.
  • Keep valuables discreet.
  • Avoid crowded rush-hour trips if possible.
  • Confirm the route before boarding.
  • Be extra careful after dark.
  • Avoid peak hours for longer trips when possible, especially roughly 07:00-09:00 and 16:30-19:30.
  • For important appointments, leave a large traffic buffer.
  • Share your live location at night and keep valuables discreet.
  • Save destinations in Google Maps with a contact number.
  • Keep a plan B: two ride apps, hotel contact or trusted driver.
  • Carry some cash in kwanzas for tolls, parking or small transport expenses.
