Plan before you move
Luanda traffic, airport distance, train schedules and changing pickup points make planning useful. Confirm the airport code, transport option, driver name, phone number and payment method before travelling.
The new NBJ airport is around 40-45 km from central Luanda. Road transfer time depends heavily on traffic, while the Bungo airport train can be useful when its timetable fits your flight.
Keep two ride apps, a trusted driver contact, offline maps and some cash in kwanzas for small transport costs.
Confirm the airport code
For most passenger flights, check for NBJ, Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport. The older Quatro de Fevereiro Airport uses code LAD.
Always check your ticket and airline update before departure.

- Pre-book a hotel transfer or trusted driver.
- Confirm meeting point, driver name and phone number.

If you are new to Luanda
A car with driver is often easier than self-drive at the beginning, especially if you are not used to local traffic, parking, checkpoints or informal directions.

- Confirm deposit, fuel policy and mileage limits.
- Inspect the car and photograph existing damage.
- Confirm what happens in case of breakdown.
- Ask whether the vehicle is suitable for your route.
Good to know
Luanda has buses and candongueiros, the shared minibus taxis used by many locals. They are cheap and common, but routes can be confusing for first-time visitors.
They are usually better for experienced locals, Portuguese speakers, or travellers accompanied by someone who knows the routes.
