Safety Tips

Safety Tips:
Luanda is a vibrant city full of life, colour and contrast — and like many large cities, it’s important to stay aware and take basic safety precautions, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the environment.
Here are a few practical tips to help you feel more secure while exploring:
Stay alert in busy areas
Markets, downtown streets and traffic-heavy zones can be lively and chaotic. Keep your belongings close and avoid showing valuables in public, especially your phone or camera.
Move around safely
Prefer moving with trusted transportation — taxis from reliable apps or private drivers are safer options. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas.
Know where you’re going
Plan your routes ahead of time and avoid venturing into neighbourhoods you don’t know — especially musseques or areas far from main roads, unless you’re with someone local you trust.
Carry only what you need
Don’t carry too much cash or all your original documents.
However, make sure to always have a form of ID with you — for residents, that usually means a passport or certified copy of the passport (and visa, if required). If you’re visiting short-term without a visa, having your passport or an official copy is still recommended.
Stay connected
Have mobile data or a local SIM card to use Google Maps or contact someone if needed. Apps like WhatsApp are widely used.
Ask for local advice
If you’re unsure about an area or activity, don’t hesitate to ask someone you trust. People in Luanda are often very helpful — just ask politely and with a smile.
The most important tip? Enjoy, but don’t switch off.
Luanda is full of energy and beauty — just be smart, stay aware, and you’ll have an amazing experience.
